in the early 70's, my family sponsored a family of 17 Vietnamese refugees. They all lived in a single-wide trailer behind our house. Every one of them that could, worked. They all gave their money to the patriarch and he doled it out only as necessary, and saved every penny he could. They began doing quite well and within just a few short years moved into a home, continued their ways of saving and living thrifty, and they began branching out buying more homes (they were not a single family of father/mother and kids, more like uncles/aunts, cousins, nieces/nephews, etc.). They have all done fairly well for themselves. The younger ones went to college. I think the youngest became an engineer or doctor or something. Doing very well.
