Weekly Update

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates last week, just been managing this back injury and a bit out of routine while on break. Even though squats and deads didn’t go to plan, I managed to hit a solid 132.5 kg × 2 on bench Sunday, followed by 112.5 kg × 5 for back-downs. All upper body accessories moved really well and strength is feeling great.

Got back under the bar for squats todayx wasn’t sure how they’d feel, but managed to hit the double I missed last Monday at 232.5 kg × 2. Back pulled up a bit average after that, so I skipped back-downs and RDLs but pushed leg press and leg extensions nice and hard.

Fingers crossed deadlifts go to plan later this week so I can ease back into full rhythm. Appreciate the support as always, won’t let you down. 💪

Will get back on track with updates too 🙏

We understand that things get busy sometimes, but I'm glad to see you updating us. The back training looks sensational. @BIGRED_

Secondary Upper Day

Wide Grip pull ups
3 x 8-12

High Incline DB press
2 x 8-10 @ 35kg

Inclined chest press machine
2 x 8-10 @ 85kg

Neutral Grip Lat pulldown
2 x 8-10 @ 90kg

Hammer DB preacher curls
2 x 8-10 @ 17.5

SA cross Body tricep extensions
2 x 8-10 @

Inclined cable skull crushers
2 x 8-10 @ ?

(Forgot to take notes for last two exercises)

Update on a bit of change of plan to the rest of prep. Will be doing an alternating heavy/light on squat and dead’s just to give the back extra rest so one week will have heavy squats and dead’s will be say 2 sets of 6 at a pretty light weight and then following week will swap. Think it’s the best option moving forward to keep feeling good

Good session for a secondary upper day. The 35 kg presses and 90 kg pulldowns make a balanced push–pull combo, and 17.5 kg preacher curls keep clean tension on the arms.
You look super huge in pics :D

Deadlift Day

As mentioned in the last post, my coach and I have made a small adjustment leading into the rest of prep leading up to comp. I’ll be alternating between heavy and light squat/deadlift sessions each week. This is just to give me that extra rest in between heavy sessions and keep this back under control.

Example:
  • Week 1: Heavy Squats (1–2 rep top set) Light Deads (2 × 5)
  • Week 2: Heavy Deads / Light Squats
Since I squatted heavy on Monday, today was a light deadlift day. I came in pretty cautious as my back pulled up a bit sore after squats, but everything moved surprisingly well — really happy with how it felt. Worked up to 170 kg × 5, focusing purely on keeping the movement clean and symmetrical.

After reviewing last week’s video (where I couldn’t even budge my warm-up weight), I noticed a few subtle things I was doing subconsciously. Made note of them and corrected them today, felt much smoother overall.

Accessories
  • Leg Press: 2 × 10 @ 280 kg
  • Bulgarian Split Squat: 2 × 8 @ 35 kg each hand
  • Lying Hamstring Curl: 2 × 8–10 @ 68 kg
  • Back Extensions: 2 × 10 @ 10 kg
Finished off with some nice long strapped dead hangs to stretch out the lower back.

Really looking hopeful we can cruise back into where we took off on deadlifts next week.

Power training, and high/low is the way to prep. 280 kg leg press already impressive but can bang out injuries. That's prep ending.

@BIGRED_ Always feels good to get in a good workout like this. Those deadlifts and those heavy training sessions really beat the crap out of you, but it feels great after.

@bigred This is a heck of a leg training day right here. Squats and deadlifts are definitely what separates the pretenders from the winners. I love the extra work you do.

And we’re back!!
Deadlifts
255kg x 2 (x2 PB)
2 x 3 @ 212.5 paused

Went into yesterday a bit cautious and honestly not overly confident, but switched on and really focused on warming up with intent. Focused hard on all the little cues and a few things I’d been subconsciously doing the past few weeks which were just habits formed from being nervous about my back.

The plan was originally to hit 247.5 kg since that was what I missed last deadlift session, but as I moved through my warm ups, everything started feeling better than expected. Decided to take 230 kg as my final warm up, and when that moved fast, I sent 255 kg, and I’m glad I did.

Even better, my back didn’t pull up wrecked after, which is a really good sign heading into next week.

Leg Press
1 x 5 @ 360kg
2 x 8 @ 300kg
(By far strongest these have been)

Bulgarian split squat
2 x 8-10 @ 35kg ea

Lying hamstring curlc
2 x 8-10 (3 sec neg)
@ 68kg

Back extension
2 x 10-12 @ 10kg

Squat day (light session)
- Core Pharma athlete

In case anyone missed the earlier updates, leading into comp I’ll be alternating heavy and light sessions for squats and deadlifts. For example, this week was heavy deads (255 × 2 + backdowns) and light squats (2 × 5 @ 170 kg). Next week will flip with heavy squats and lighter 5-rep sets on deads. Recovered well from Monday’s heavy pulls, they moved nicely, and I was definitely grateful for the lighter squats last night as another heavy session would’ve been a bit much.

Squats
2 x 5 @ 170kg

RDLs
2 x 8 @ 140kg

Banded Leg press
2 x 8-10 at 250kg

Quad extension
3 x 8-10 @ 70kg

This one is definitely looking solid. It's great to see a nice job on the leg training. @BIGRED_ The squats and the Romanian deadlifts are really tough back to back.

Another solid session under the bar, hit a new double PB on bench. The new heavy/light split seems to be doing its job perfectly for fatigue management. I normally bench Sunday mornings, but felt fresh after work Saturday night, so decided to get it done then instead and everything moved really well.

Hit my programmed 137.5 kg × 2 smooth as butter, messaged the coach and said “surely 3 plates?” got the thumbs up, so went for 140 kg × 2 and still had more in the tank.

Only 7.5 kg off my comp PB for a double, six weeks out, a great sign of where things are heading.

Bench:
137.5 kg × 2
140 kg × 2
2 × 5 @ 120 kg

DB shoulder press
2 x 8-10 @ 32.5

T bar row
3 x 8-10 @ 80,80,75

Cable lateral raise
3 x 8-10 @ 27.2, 22.7,22.7

Seated back row machine neutral grip
3 x 8-10 @ 140kg

Incline Db curls
3 x 8-10 @ 20,17.5,17.5

Strong bench work, 140 kg x 2 is strong! Heavy/light split working well for you.

Good upper balance too with 32.5 kg DB press and 80 kg T-bar rows. 6 weeks out, you’re perfect now!

Huge double PB on squats this week. Went in feeling pretty well recovered, back wasn’t perfect but definitely manageable. Warm up was on point and everything moved smoothly on the way up. Ended up hitting a big 12.5 kg jump from last squat session and the top set moved well overall. Wasn’t super happy with form, foot placement was a bit off which caused some knee. Got some mono attachment arms on the way so I won’t have to walk out my last few heavy squat sessions thankfully. Was a bit sore after the top set so I dropped the backdowns a bit lighter and swapped the RDLs for ghds to play it smart

Last SBD double, onto singles now

1 x 2 @ 245kg
2 x 3 & 180kg

Banded leg press
3 x 10-12 @ 260kg

Quad extension
3 x 8-10 @ 70kg

GHD hamstring bias
3 x 10-12 @ 15kg

Good call swapping RDLs for GHDs after that strain, dont want to injure.

This is the sickest leg day I've seen in a while. 300lbs (135kg) for me on squats is deadly. I don't think I'll try that again I did it just for @LevButlerov LOL

Really good session last night! Only a couple of light sets, but it definitely gave me some confidence for the heavy squat session early next week. Noticed from reps two to five I let myself descend a bit quicker and more naturally, which resulted in a bit more depth and spring out of the hole. Recently I’d become a little hesitant on the descent due to being cautious with my back, but this felt much better. Hopefully I can carry that over to my heavy single. Back is feeling really good at the moment, so I’m going to focus on mobility and movement work over the weekend to keep feeling a1. Anadrol will come into the mix Monday so should spice things up for these final heavy weeks

Hey Team!
Sorry for being slack with updates the last week, just had a bit on. But we’re back with a couple big days on the bench and deadlift!!

Was a bit flat Sunday after having to work my only day off but we sucked it up and got in and hit an equal comp pb on bench. Probably should have been slightly faster considering the 145 x 2 last week but we’ve still got 2 more bench sessions to go so an equal comp pb is good!

Deadlifts Tuesday
Hit a nice 285kg single, Definitely plenty in the tank. Happy with positioning and how the back is feeling

Been doing a lot of swimming on rest days to keep mobility on point.

Getting close now lads!!

Nearly game day, team!

Kicked off the week with a light SBD session on Monday:
• Squat 200 x 1
• Bench 120 x 1
• Deadlift 220 x 1

Then today went a bit lighter:
• Squat 120 x 3
• Bench 120 x 3
• Deadlift 150 x 3

Focusing on active recovery and mobility this week. With time off work, I’m set to feel fresh and ready by Sunday.

Had a tough wrap-up to last weekended up in the hospital with heat stroke but bounced back quickly after some IV fluids. Now just gotta prioritize nutrition, hydration, and soaking up this chilly southern weather.

Comp Day Update

Hey team! I hate to come back with not the greatest news after such an exciting prep and all the support from you guys, especially Core Pharma. Unfortunately, we didn’t really get the day we envisioned this weekend. In my last heavy training session, I re-tweaked my back after it had been feeling so good for so long. I really thought the extended rest afterward, plus a couple of physio sessions, would get me back on track, but it wasn’t great. On top of that, I had heat stroke 8 days out, which knocked my overall health and food intake around for a few days after.

I went into squats feeling not too bad and hit 270kg on my second attempt, which I wasn’t overly disappointed with but I’d hit 270 in training, so I really should have had at least 280. The 270 was a grind, so I called it there and didn’t go for a third. My back really flared up after squats. I hit 145kg on bench and jumped to 155kg for my second attempt with no luck, I’d nailed this in training, so it should have been doable, but I think I just couldn’t get into position with my back being as bad as it was, plus maybe some mental factors too.

Then, warming up for deadlifts, my planned opener was 280kg, but I barely moved 220kg in the warm-up, so I packed it up and went home.

As disappointing as it was, you’ve gotta take the good with the bad, bound to have a rough day eventually, and there are always lessons to learn. I’ve been neglecting my back and hip health for the better part of my powerlifting career, so this was a bit of a wake-up call that you can’t expect to start hitting numbers around 300 and keep excelling without addressing it. So, I’m really focused now on getting my body feeling as good as possible and super mobile. Overall, my drive and fire for the next one is brighter than ever. I’m ready to make a comeback. No slowing down, was back in the gym the next day, starting on rehab.

Once again I just wanna give the biggest of thanks to @Core Pharma Rep for the sponsorship for this prep, as well as the whole crew in here who showed support throughout. Will be back with an offseason log shortly!

good to see you back @BIGRED_ tbh just being there is a win and shows your mindset. The numbers you managed, with a bad back and heat stroke would have folded most people. This setback is only building a bigger comeback. EVO family support and love your way :D never give up stay strong!

Bro, you showed up and pushed through and 'embraced the suck' that you were faced with. This means more than if you had have been fresh and hit PR's (to me at least), shows you're willing to push your body past what it wants to do by using your mind. You proved to yourself you're never out of the fight. Fucking well done brother!
