Hi everyone,
I’ve recently started working out again (1 month) and after quite a bit of research I’ve decided it’s time to pop my cherry and hop onto my first cycle.
I’ve gotten quite a lot of inspiration and read quite a few posts on the forums, especially after seeing @Dadbod1996 transformation. You guys across all the threads have amazed me at how positive, non judgemental, and encouraging you are whilst also offering such valuable advice which is not common at all on any other forum I’ve come across so I really am excited to share my journey and would appreciate any and all advice possible.
After reading through the posts I guessed the best thing to do is just start a log and see where we go from there. I’ll write up a bit about myself, my goals and where I stand right now and on the next post of this thread I’ll write up my plan on how I think would be best to go about the next few months.
Age: 24
Height: 5’9
Weight: 257 lbs (117kg) - dropped 13lbs (6kg) in the last 30 days
Prior Lifting Experience:
I started working out when I was 13/14 for a few months. Went to a boys school in a rough part of the city so there was a lot of investment in sports to shift focus away from drugs/violence so we had an amazing gym we’d use at lunch breaks. I learn good form but never really pushed myself much and didn’t really stick with it after I moved schools.
Ballooned from 175lbs (80kg) to 242lbs (110kg) during the first year and half of Covid. I returned to the gym after many years but had no structured plan and wasn’t following a diet. Only ended up working out for 2 months but made progress such as benching from 154lbs (70kg) to 225lbs (100kg).
Early 2023 I was weighing 253lbs (115kg). Again I didn’t really go on a diet other than the first 2 weeks keto at 1800 calories but I stayed consistently working out for 3 months and was the strongest I’d been in my life. Dropped weight down to 225lbs over those months and grew my bench from a 200lbs (90kg) max to a 308lbs (140kg) max - sorry for always using bench as an indicator but it’s my favourite lol. I got addicted to the gym and the progress but I had a new business that I had just opened which I had to make some sacrifices for such as moving away from home and dedicating most waking hours to it. If I went back in time I still would’ve made time for working out some way or another but I guess I wasn’t that mature at the time and didn’t look at my health as my main priority.
April 2025:
The days leading up to April I realised it was time for a drastic change. I’m now a new dad, my business has been running a few years, I genuinely feel like I matured a lot and realised that the greatest asset I have is my body. I’ve got unhealthy friends who are very wealthy and friends that have their dream body and not much else and it’s the latter that always seem to be much happier and content with life.
Ive been on a 1500 deficit consisting of:
1550 calories - 204g protein, 70g fat, 28g carbs
I’ve averaged 11k daily steps the last 5 weeks compared to a 3.5k daily step average for the 5 months before that.
I’ve been weight training about 5-6 days a week this month. I’ve never been on such an aggressive calorie deficit so haven’t ever felt as exhausted and weak as I do now but I’ve been able to regain some of my strength on most lifts.
Flat Bench Max - 264lbs/120kg (220lbs/100kg beginning of month)
Incline Bench Max - 231lbs/105kg (176lbs/80kg beginning of month)
Barbell Squat - 352lbs/160kg (264lbs/120kg beginning of month)
Bent over Row - 242lbs/110kg (132lbs/60kg beginning of month)
This last month I’ve not only lost 13lbs/6kg but I’ve felt a big change in my mindset and relationship with my body and food. I’ve become obsessed with learning about my body now and improving myself and genuinely feel shocked and sickened at how for so many years I viewed food as such a big part of happiness and enjoyment rather than just a means for survival.
Although I’ve always thought about using gear every time I’d touch weights, I always knew I didn’t have the discipline or commitment or even basic knowledge to begin with. This time has felt different and I know I’ve made mindset changes for life but I was still hesitant because I know I have a high body fat percentage so risk of sides. However, after some more research and seeing stories and transformations on this forum I realised it was time to take the leap so I ordered the gear and got some pre-cycle bloods done.
I’ll start the log in the next post.
