We had
@Noah Wixx on the podcast today and he had just experienced his first 48 hour fast and one of the things he mentioned was how clearly he was thinking while fasting. One of the main reasons for this is obviously because your body switches from glycogen to ketones for energy during a fast but there are also several other reasons that we didn't get a chance to touch on during the podcast that I wanted to put in writing. I have talked about some of these already earlier in this log but i wanted to post up some specific information about how fasting helps with brain fog and mental clarity.
1. Ketosis: This one is pretty simple but once your glucose is depleted while fasting your liver starts spitting out ketones. You will know when this happens by buying those ketone strips from the drug store and pissing on them. The ketones will provide a consistent stream of fuel for your brain which feels very different then the sugar/carb highs you might be used to
2. Body Stress reduction: The 2nd big reason is your digestive system gets a break. Imagine if you ran your lawnmower nonstop for days and days with no break. The motor would get super hot and over time it will not run well. Your digestion is the same way. Those that eat every 2-3 hours and never give their digestion a break will use up energy that could be used on the brain and other things too. Most people use 50% or more of their daily energy just on digestion, fasting frees that energy up.
3. lower inflammation: when you eat you become more inflamed. When you fast the opposite happens. We know with dementia patients inflammation of the brain is a huge problem and they will get confused, some days are worse then others. When you fast you reduce the inflammation of the brain making your brain think more clearly.
4. Cell repair/autophagy: our bodies have cells all over the place, whether it's your muscles, your organs, or anything else. When you fast your cells will replace themselves with better and newer cells so your brain cells will actually get fresh troops just like anything else. That will help you think clearly and think like you were younger again.
5. BDNF: when you fast, you increase the level of BDNF, which is a protein that supports neuron growth and other benefits. It also has been proved in studies to help with learning and memory function. If you are studying for a test, for example, you'll notice that you're able to study a lot easier when you have a clear stomach and you're fasting versus eating fast food or pizza and feeling like crap and then trying to crash for an exam. Called students, could benefit from understanding this big time. I know I experienced it myself in college but at the time had no clue why I was able to think more clearly when I was not scarfing down a bad meal. The food companies though want you to think that you need to eat to function physically and mentally and it's just the opposite.
